Scientists have now detected the space hurricane above the Earth’s upper atmosphere for around eight hours. A new study has discovered a swirling mass of plasma sized 600-mile-wide several miles above the North Pole.
The study has confirmed that the spotted space hurricane was seen raining electrons instead of water over the North Pole. Earlier, there were speculations regarding the existence of space hurricanes but now scientists have given evidence to confirm their existence.
Mike Lockwood, a space scientist at the University of Reading in the UK, has called this observation an incredible achievement. Many scientists from Shandong University in China analyzed the 2014 satellite data related to space hurricanes.
The study authors have declared that more study is needed on this subject as this type of geomagnetic activity can affect the functioning of GPS satellites. The observation has highlighted the anti-clockwise movement of the space hurricane with multiple spiral arms.
The phenomenon took place for nearly 8 hours before the slowing down of the movement. This space hurricane enjoys similarity with the hurricanes present in the Earth’s lower atmosphere. The creation of tropical storms and hurricanes takes place in Earth’s lower atmosphere above warm water bodies.
It happens due to the creation of low pressure near the surface and it leads to strong winds & the creation of clouds to yield heavy rain. According to Lockwood, such storms carry a lot of energy and the creation of space hurricanes takes place due to the fast transfer of solar wind energy & charged particles in the upper atmosphere of the Earth.
