In March last year many countries underwent strict lockdown measures because of the rapidly spreading COVID-19 Virus. But now that vaccines are being created, a new problem has cropped up. The virus is mutating and it has had many strains. One strain was discovered in the UK, which was close to having a SARS variant. Now, a new strain has been discovered in Brazil. However, officials are happy to report that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is effective against the new Brazilian strain.
Globally, there have been 117.4 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and more than 2.6 million associated deaths. The United States has been the most affected by the virus with 29 million confirmed cases. 527,000 people in the United States have died from the disease.
But the good news is 61 million people in the United States have received their first COVID-19 vaccine dose. Officials were worried about the virus mutations and new strains but the PFizer and BioNTech vaccines are doing the work and are effective against the new Brazilian virus strain.
The new strain was spotted in Brazil in January this year. It has the capacity of infecting people who have already been infected. But the vaccines are working against the new strains and It is raising hopes that continuing vaccination efforts will help curb COVID-19.
US Officials had decided to lift the restrictions of COVID-19. But the new strains have made things complicated. However, 2 months from now the United States will have a surplus of vaccine which will be almost 500 million doses. Health Officials and the administration are still asking people to follow precaution because COVID-19 isn’t over yet, and variants can still be a risk.
