COVID-19 has taken over our lives, as well as the news channel. There are thousands of news circulating about the disease. However, not all of them are accurate. In the age of digitalization, news reaches fast. But the authenticity is often questionable. That’s why when a study claimed that COVID-19 may affect male sperm count and fertility, health experts warned people about it.
A possible study was published in the journal Reproduction, and it claimed that “COVID-19 infection impairs semen quality and male reproductive potential”. The study shocked many and experts were unsure of it.
Allan Pacey, a professor of andrology at The University of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, United Kingdom, said that the study may be an Overgeneralized way to deal with the data. Allan said that whenever a male is ill, their sperm count lowers or ever drops to zero due to the sickness. That may have nothing to do with COVID-19 and everything to do with the weakness of the body.
But after a few months or weeks of recovery, the sperm health and count bounce back to normal. It is nothing to worry about. Dr. Channa Jayasena, a consultant in reproductive endocrinology and andrology at Imperial College London said that it is impossible to say whether the lowering of sperm count levels is due to COVID-19 or just the sickness.
In the study, there was a comparison of 105 fertile men without Covid-19 to 84 fertile men diagnosed with the coronavirus. Their semen was analyzed at 10-day intervals for 60 days. And it was found that the fertility health of COVID-19 males was low compared to healthy males.
